Mexico's most iconic screen grandparents celebrated

Mexico celebrates Grandparents' Day on August 28, a date dedicated to recognizing the fundamental place grandparents hold within families. For generations, these figures have served as sources of affection, wisdom, and companionship, often acting as storytellers, tradition keepers, and confidantes to their grandchildren.

This cherished image has been vividly portrayed in Mexican cinema and television, where actors have brought to life memorable grandparent characters. These on-screen abuelos and abuelas have ranged from stern and formidable to tender and protective, and even mischievous, etching themselves into the collective memory of audiences.

Among the most iconic is Sara García, whose name is synonymous with the Mexican grandmother figure in film. García famously took on elderly roles even when relatively young, famously altering her appearance for a theater role by having 14 teeth removed. Her image became permanently associated with the quintessential Mexican grandmother, capable of both stern authority and warm protection.

Her portrayal of Luisa García in "Los tres García," alongside Pedro Infante, showcased a strong matriarch.
