Mexico's Security Secretariat to review Aguascalientes arrest after governor's call

Mexico's Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) has announced it will review the conduct of its officers during the arrest of Felipe Lomelí in Aguascalientes. The review comes at the request of Governor Tere Jiménez, who intervened after Lomelí's family protested his detention, asserting his innocence.

The incident occurred on July 28 in the municipality of Jesús María. During the inauguration of the Puente de las Margaritas, Lomelí's family members voiced their objections, demanding justice and claiming the arrest was unjust. Governor Jiménez engaged with the protesters, assuring them that an investigation was underway and that initial findings suggested Lomelí's innocence.

In a public display, Governor Jiménez used her cell phone to call SSPC Secretary Omar García Harfuch, requesting a review of the case. She stated, "On Saturday (July 25) there was an operation here in Aguascalientes, the people are very upset, based on what we have investigated, they took a person whom everyone knows is innocent. He works in maintenance at the country club and sells juices. We ask that the files be reviewed, as what we have investigated indicates he is innocent."

García Harfuch asked the governor to have the state prosecutor provide a summary of the case for his review. Governor Jiménez subsequently sent him a video, accompanied by Lomelí's family, to reiterate their call for justice. Videos circulating on social media show Lomelí's family members questioning officers about their identification and demanding to see an arrest warrant, expressing fears of a potential kidnapping. In one clip, several women physically intervened to protect Lomelí, and an elderly man fell to the ground.

The SSPC stated that it is reviewing the case to ensure that the actions of its personnel complied with protocols and applicable legal frameworks. This review follows the agency's reported success in detaining six individuals in the region, including a key figure in a criminal cell, and seizing weapons, drugs, vehicles, and properties.
