Mexico to Analyze FIFA's Proposal for New Financial Model

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) confirmed it is reviewing a significant proposal from FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding a new financial model designed to boost the FIFA Forward program. The FMF received notification of this proposal on July 28 and is committed to a thorough analysis before committing to any decision.

FIFA intends to facilitate informed decision-making by organizing working groups to present comprehensive information and documentation related to the project. The FMF stated it will "exhaust this study and analysis process" to determine the best course of action for the development of Mexican football. This comes amid global football's institutional challenges.

The proposal, known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), seeks to generate $4.2 billion by potentially ceding up to 20% of television rights, sponsorships, and ticketing for FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup, to private investors. If approved, each of the 211 member federations could receive up to $40 million during the 2027-2030 cycle, a substantial increase from the approximately $10 million they might receive if the project is rejected.

This initiative has already sparked controversy, notably drawing criticism from UEFA, which views it as a privatization of the World Cup and a form of pressure due to a September 19 deadline. Reports suggest UEFA and Concacaf have even threatened to withdraw from FIFA tournaments if the project proceeds. Infantino, however, defends the FFE, asserting it is a democratic decision for member federations and aims to reinvest value back into national associations without relinquishing regulatory control.
