Mexico U-20 Seeks Olympic Qualifier Revenge Against Guatemala

The Mexican U-20 national team is set to face Guatemala in a crucial match, aiming for redemption after a painful elimination by the same opponent in the qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics. In the 2022 CONCACAF U-20 Championship held in Honduras, Mexico's U-20 team, then managed by Luis Pérez, was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Guatemala in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. This defeat not only cost them a place in the Paris Olympics but also a spot in the subsequent U-20 World Cup held in Argentina. The generation that included players like Bryan González, Isaías Violante, and Esteban Lozano was deeply affected by this outcome.

Currently, Mexico leads its group in the ongoing CONCACAF U-20 Championship with six points, following victories over Antigua and Barbuda (3-0) and Costa Rica (2-0). A draw against Guatemala would secure their advancement to the quarterfinals as group leaders. Guatemala, with three points from a win against Antigua and Barbuda and a loss to Costa Rica, will also be looking to secure a favorable position.

Despite the historical setback, the Mexican team, under coach Alex Diego, is determined to secure a perfect nine points from the group stage.
