Miaoli County road cracks: Government rules out natural disaster, points to pipeline work

A 20-meter stretch of rural road in Shuipo Village, Yuanli Township, Miaoli County, has developed significant cracks, raising safety concerns among local residents. The fissure, which runs down the center of the road, prompted local representatives to seek central and local government assistance for emergency repairs.

However, the Miaoli County government's agricultural department conducted a site inspection and concluded that the road damage was not a result of natural disaster. Consequently, it does not qualify for disaster recovery subsidies. The department indicated that the cracking is believed to stem from pipeline excavation work.

To address the issue, the county government plans to review existing records of pipeline excavation and repair activities in the area. This investigation aims to clarify the cause of the road's deterioration and assign responsibility for the necessary repairs. The Yuanli Township office stated it would issue a notice to the relevant pipeline excavation unit, demanding restoration of the road.

Local council chairman Hong Huang-chi expressed concern, noting the damaged section's proximity to overpasses for the high-speed rail and highway. He highlighted that an elderly couple resides in the area and urged swift clarification of the cause and prompt repair to ensure resident safety. The situation underscores the challenges in differentiating between natural disaster damage and infrastructure-related issues requiring different avenues for resolution and funding.
