Miaoli County's Road Repair Turns Provincial Highway 28 into "Bumper Car" Lanes; County Government Promises Asphalt Paving Today

Residents of Miaoli County are voicing their frustration over what they deem unacceptable road repair quality on Provincial Highway 28. The recent patching, which left sections of the road resembling a "bumper car" track with uneven white cement, has drawn sharp criticism from the public and highlighted concerns about the "road leveling policy" in the region.

The Miaoli County Government's Department of Transportation and Public Works explained that the initial repair was a necessary emergency measure. Heavy rains in April caused the roadbed to collapse near the 5.5-kilometer mark, leading to significant road surface damage. Due to a shortage of asphalt materials, influenced by international conditions, the county opted for a temporary concrete repair to prevent further deterioration and ensure basic passage.

However, the public's patience has worn thin. The use of white cement and the resulting uneven surface have led to accusations of shoddy workmanship and corner-cutting. Many residents, particularly those in the Xihu Township area, have expressed serious concerns about traffic safety, describing the road as perilous to navigate.

Responding to the outcry, the county government confirmed that the contractor has now begun the process of repaving the affected sections with asphalt. The work is expected to be completed, including the repainting of road lines, allowing the road to fully reopen to traffic soon. This development aims to address the immediate safety concerns and restore the road to a more acceptable standard, though the initial repair has certainly left a lasting impression on the local community.
