Michelin-starred South Korean restaurant owner faces jail for serving ants on dessert

The owner of a Michelin-starred restaurant in South Korea is facing a potential one-year prison sentence for decorating a sorbet dessert with black ants, reportedly to impart a sour flavor. Prosecutors in Seoul requested the jail time during a court hearing on Monday, accusing the establishment's owner of violating food safety regulations.

South Korean law permits the consumption of only 10 specific insect species, such as grasshoppers and mealworm larvae. However, the restaurant, which boasts two Michelin stars, is accused of serving prohibited ant species that were allegedly imported from Thailand and the United States, according to the Ministry of Food Safety.

Authorities launched their investigation last year after allegations surfaced that the chef topped dishes with "three to five" ants to enhance their sourness. A photograph released by the government shows a round tin labeled "Kitchen - Black Ants." In addition to the prison sentence, prosecutors are seeking a fine.

The defense team for the accused argued that the ant-decorated desserts were exclusively served to customers who had given prior consent. The defendant, in his final statement, apologized for the incident, stating he "did not fully understand the relevant regulations."
