Michelle Bolsonaro to run for Senate, says deputy

Michelle Bolsonaro, wife of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, will run for the Senate representing the Federal District for the Liberal Party (PL). The announcement came from federal deputy Bia Kicis, who is also seeking a Senate seat and will form a ticket with Bolsonaro.

Kicis revealed the news during an event in Brasília, stating that Bolsonaro could not attend because she was undergoing a hospital resonance scan. "The resonance was scheduled for 3 p.m. and had not yet happened, so she will not be able to be here in person, but she entrusted me with giving you this great news. Michelle Bolsonaro announces that she is indeed a pre-candidate for the Senate for the PL of the Federal District," Kicis said.

Bolsonaro's political aspirations had been uncertain, with reports suggesting her role as caregiver for Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest and facing health issues, was a significant obstacle. However, her entry into the race signals a strong push by the PL party in the Federal District, with Kicis emphasizing a powerful all-female ticket.

Further solidifying the party's strategy, Michelle Bolsonaro's brother, Diego Torres Dourado, is slated to be the first substitute on the ticket. Another brother, Eduardo Torres, will run for district deputy. This move appears to consolidate Michelle Bolsonaro's influence within the PL's Federal District chapter, even as she stated her cycle with PL Mulher, the party's women's wing, has concluded.
