Michelle calls Mendonça an ‘anointed one of the Lord’ amid STF crisis

Michelle Bolsonaro has described Supreme Federal Court Justice André Mendonça as an “anointed one of the Lord” as an institutional crisis unfolds at Brazil’s top court.

In an Instagram post, the former first lady recalled supporting Mendonça’s nomination to the court. Before joining the STF, he served as attorney general of the Union under then-President Jair Bolsonaro. Michelle is now running for the Senate in the Federal District.

“On a very significant day, in our little consecration room, God revealed to me that you would enter that court. (...) After that day, we were certain that that seat was yours,” Michelle wrote. She added: “Be strong and courageous. Do not retreat!”

The dispute involves a report ordered by Mendonça, the court’s rapporteur in the Master case, into banker Daniel Vorcaro’s relationship with an interlocutor later identified as Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Estadão published the full report. Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet asked for it to be declared void, arguing that Mendonça ordered an investigation into Moraes without seeking authorization from the court’s full bench, as required under the law governing the privileged jurisdiction of public officials.

Moraes then asked Court President Edson Fachin to add Mendonça to the fake-news inquiry. He cited Federal Police intelligence reports alleging signs of bias in Mendonça’s handling of the Master case and investigations into fraud involving Brazil’s social security system. The documents themselves, however, state that they lack an evidentiary basis. Fachin rejected the request and asked Moraes, Mendonça, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Federal Police to comment. Their deadline is September 21.
