Michigan Democratic primary won by progressive candidate, challenging establishment

Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate, has won the Democratic primary nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan. His victory is seen as a significant boost for the party's anti-establishment wing as the midterm elections approach. El-Sayed, who has a medical background, centered his campaign on healthcare and economic issues. He also advocates for ending unconditional military aid to Israel.

El-Sayed faced off against moderate candidate Haley Stevens, a U.S. Representative supported by Democratic leaders and pro-Israel groups. Stevens' supporters argued she had a better chance of winning the general election in Michigan, a state President Trump has won twice in the last three presidential elections. However, El-Sayed's campaign energized young voters and is expected to increase turnout among liberals and first-time voters.

The primary race highlighted a division within the Democratic Party regarding economic populism, anti-establishment stances, and policy toward Israel. Progressive senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren backed El-Sayed, while establishment figures like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Stevens. Despite the internal divisions, Schumer and other Democratic leaders congratulated El-Sayed on his win, emphasizing party unity against Republicans and the goal of retaking the Senate.

Republicans have criticized El-Sayed as "dangerous" and "extreme." President Trump also commented on social media, calling El-Sayed a "communist loser" and suggesting his victory would be beneficial for Republicans. El-Sayed will now face Republican former U.S. Representative Mike Rogers in the November general election for the Senate seat.
