Micron Taiwan union mulls strike over bonus disparity amid AI boom

Micron workers at the company's factory in Taoyuan, Taiwan, are contemplating strike action over perceived unfair bonus distributions, particularly in light of the burgeoning artificial intelligence industry. The Micron Labor Union reportedly held two "union strike explanation meetings" in Guishan District, Taoyuan, on the evening of July 30th to address workers' concerns and discuss the potential exercise of their right to strike.

These meetings were prompted by growing discontent among employees regarding bonus policies. While the current policy offers bonuses equivalent to 200% of an employee's annual salary, with a cap of five months' pay, workers reportedly receive closer to 2.6 months' worth. This is seen as insufficient when compared to competitors like Samsung, whose employees have recently agitated for better compensation. The perceived disparity in rewards, coupled with slow growth in salaries and benefits, has fueled a significant increase in union membership and a heightened sense of "relative deprivation" among Micron's Taiwanese workforce.

The situation echoes recent labor actions in South Korea, where Samsung employees protested low bonuses despite the AI boom. After negotiations, Samsung agreed to distribute bonuses equivalent to 10.5% of operating profit, removing a previous 50% cap. The Micron union's discussions in Taiwan aim to explore similar avenues, seeking to ensure that the company's compensation structure adequately reflects the contributions of its employees during this period of rapid technological advancement. The union's goal is to clarify labor rights and rally support for potential collective action if demands are not met.
