Middle East: US Military Reports New Attacks Against Iran

The U.S. military has initiated new strikes against Iran, characterizing the actions as a direct response to attempted Iranian attacks on U.S. forces in the Middle East. The strikes commenced Wednesday evening, U.S. Eastern Time, according to U.S. Central Command (Centcom) on the platform X.

Details regarding the specific targets of these latest U.S. attacks remain undisclosed. The move follows earlier threats of retaliation from U.S. President Donald Trump. Just hours before the strikes, the U.S. military had reported an Iranian ballistic missile attack on U.S. troops in the region, which Centcom stated were all intercepted. Iran's state broadcaster, citing the Revolutionary Guards, claimed the attack targeted a U.S. military base in Jordan, a claim Jordan's armed forces stated involved intercepting five missiles from Iran.

These developments occur amidst a backdrop of heightened tensions. The U.S. and Israel began airstrikes on Iran on February 28. While a framework agreement was reportedly reached in mid-June to pave the way for ending the war through negotiations, and a ceasefire had been in place since April, President Trump declared it over due to numerous violations. Tehran also appears to no longer consider itself bound by the preliminary declaration.
