Middle Schooler Swept Away by Sea Rescued by Army Sergeant

A South Korean Army corporal has been identified as the "tube hero" who rescued a middle school student from strong waves off the coast of Goseong County. Corporal Go Young-woo, who serves at a frontline guard post with the 22nd Infantry Division, was on a day off with colleagues when he heard a desperate call for help.

He found a teenager struggling in the powerful waves, while the student's family was unable to reach them due to the strong currents. Without hesitation, Go grabbed a nearby tube, plunged into the sea, and reached the student. He provided the tube for the student to hold onto and guided them through the rough water to safety.

After ensuring the student was out of danger, Go quietly departed the scene, declining to stay for the family's repeated expressions of gratitude. He humbly stated that any soldier would have acted the same way in such a situation. Go expressed his commitment to always prioritizing the protection of citizens' lives without hesitation.

Corporal Go is currently performing day and night border surveillance duties at a front-line GP. His unit highly commends his courage and sense of responsibility for undertaking the rescue despite the risks involved.
