Miguel Mancera Aguayo Dies at 93; First Governor of Autonomous Bank of Mexico

Miguel Mancera Aguayo, a pivotal figure in Mexico's economic history, passed away on Monday, August 10, at the age of 93 in Mexico City.

Mancera Aguayo had a distinguished career at the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), serving as its director for 16 years. In 1994, he became the institution's first governor following its transition to autonomy. His tenure was marked by significant economic challenges, including navigating severe crises and implementing new monetary programs, such as the introduction of the New Peso in 1992.

Political figures and institutions have paid tribute to his legacy. Olga Sánchez Cordero, a retired minister and Morena deputy, remembered him as a "key piece in the economic stability of our country" and praised his "invaluable legacy as the first governor of autonomous @Banxico, leading with integrity through historic moments."

The Institute for Protection of Bank Savings (IPAB) also lamented his death, recognizing his significant contributions to strengthening Mexico's financial institutions. Mancera Aguayo's academic background included a degree in economics from ITAM and a Master's in Economics from Yale University. He also held various academic positions and served on the board of ITAM for many years.

His career at the Bank of Mexico began in 1957. He held several key positions before being appointed Director General in 1982. After reforms granted the bank autonomy, he became its first governor, a role he held until his retirement in 1998.
