Milei meets US public diplomacy official in Chile ahead of Falklands speech

Javier Milei met a senior US public diplomacy official in Santiago on Thursday, hours before he was scheduled to address Argentines on the country’s claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

The meeting with Sarah Rogers, the US under secretary of state for public diplomacy, took place at the San Carlos de Apoquindo events center. Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and Milei’s sister, Presidential General Secretary Karina Milei, also attended. No details were released about the issues discussed.

The encounter was one of only a few activities on Milei’s agenda during his visit to the Chilean capital. He also spoke at the Madrid Forum and met Chilean President José Antonio Kast.

The timing gave the meeting added weight. Milei was preparing to deliver a speech on the sovereignty dispute, which concerns islands administered by the United Kingdom. Earlier in the week, he called the claim the “most important and sacred” cause for Argentines while thanking Donald Trump for suggesting that Washington could change its position and support Argentina’s sovereignty claim.

Trump had said his administration was reviewing its position on the Falklands. “I always review all positions, that is just one among many,” he said in response to a question from a journalist at the White House. Milei had previously described the US alliance as the “key” to recovering the islands, arguing that Argentina met Washington’s strategic requirements. Days later, US Ambassador Peter Lamelas said there had been no change in US policy, which has historically remained neutral on sovereignty while recognizing British administration of the archipelago.
