Milei's government clashes with Catholic Church over Tedeum sermon

Argentina's President Javier Milei and his government have entered into a public dispute with the Catholic Church following an archbishop's Tedeum homily delivered on May 25. The sermon, given by Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva, criticized social fragmentation and the divisive nature of online discourse, which the president's allies found offensive.

While Milei himself offered a measured response, calling only some parts of the archbishop's message "exaggerated," his more vocal supporters escalated their criticism, reportedly resorting to insults against the religious leader. The archbishop's homily focused on calls for national pacification, urging an end to division and polarization, and condemning online behavior as "terrorism in the networks."

In a previous Tedeum, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, had openly criticized political corruption. The Kirchner couple subsequently avoided Tedeum ceremonies led by Bergoglio, opting for those with more accommodating bishops.

Archbishop García Cuerva's message was notably more moderate than Bergoglio's past critiques. He refrained from mentioning political corruption, a topic currently under scrutiny in Argentina, and instead focused on social issues and the need for peace. Despite this, his remarks on social division and online rhetoric were enough to provoke a reaction from the Milei government, which is known for its assertive stance on various issues.
