Military declares top ISWAP commanders wanted following intelligence from recovered devices

Nigerian military authorities have declared several senior commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) wanted. This action follows forensic analysis of electronic devices recovered during recent combat operations in the Lake Chad region of Borno State. The breakthrough came after offensive operations against ISWAP fighters in northern Borno, according to Mohammed Goni, acting spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai.

Troops recovered various devices, including a camcorder allegedly used by ISWAP members for propaganda videos and to document operations. Forensic analysis of these devices yielded actionable intelligence, allowing security forces to identify locations linked to terrorist activities and pinpoint several high-ranking ISWAP commanders. These commanders are reportedly operating along the Mangari–Metele–Dogon Chukun axis, near the Lake Chad Basin in Abadam and Kukawa local government areas.

Among the declared wanted commanders are Abu Musa Al-Mangawi Baa Shuwa, identified as the ISWAP Wali (Governor), and his deputy, Muhammad Jidda, also known as “The One-Handed Man.” Hamad Abu Hanifa, the group’s Amirul-Fiya (field commander), is also named. Baa Shuwa is described as the most wanted ISWAP leader currently active in the Lake Chad Basin.

The military announced plans to offer a substantial financial reward for credible information leading to the arrest of Baa Shuwa. Information provided by the public will be treated confidentially, with informants' identities protected. Residents are urged to support counter-terrorism efforts by providing timely information through security channels or by calling a designated hotline. The public is strongly advised against confronting or attempting to apprehend suspected terrorists.
