Military: Rainfall, Muddy Terrain Hampering War Against Terrorists in Northern Region

The Nigerian military's fight against terrorism in the northern region faces significant obstacles due to the current rainy season, which has made operations "doubly difficult." Major General W.B Idris, Theatre Commander of Operation Fansan Yamma, explained that rainfall and muddy terrain severely restrict the movement of heavy combat vehicles, essential for reaching remote areas where terrorists now seek refuge.

Our operational vehicles are heavy military platforms. During the rainy season, movement becomes extremely difficult because the terrain becomes soft and inaccessible.

Idris noted that months of aggressive operations had degraded terrorist capabilities along major road corridors, forcing insurgents to alter their tactics. While troops maintain effective control over most strategic highways and transportation routes, terrorists have retreated into remote forests, rocky terrain, and isolated settlements. These areas become inaccessible to military patrols during the rainy season.

He added that even air support, crucial for operations in difficult terrain, can be limited by adverse weather conditions during this period.

They have realised that the major roads are no longer safe for them. They now move deep into the hinterland, where they attack isolated farmers and vulnerable communities.

Despite these challenges, the military reports significant successes between January and April 2026, including the weekly recovery of weapons and the neutralization of terrorists. Idris assured that the military is adapting and maximizing available opportunities to sustain pressure on terrorist groups, vowing to pursue them regardless of terrain or weather conditions. The current situation, however, highlights the complex interplay between military strategy and environmental factors in counter-insurgency operations.

Nevertheless, we continue to adapt and maximise every available opportunity to sustain pressure on terrorist groups. We are not relenting in our efforts. We shall continue to pursue terrorists wherever they are hiding, irrespective of the terrain or weather conditions.
