Millimeters from agreement: Iran-US war could end

A peace agreement between Iran and the United States appears closer than ever, following over three months of conflict. Mediated by Pakistan, the preliminary talks have outlined a framework for peace that could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the easing of certain sanctions imposed on Iran.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Saturday that the US and Iran have agreed on the basic terms of a peace treaty. He indicated that the first agreement could be signed within the next 24 hours. Pakistan is reportedly working on the technical preparations for an electronic signature, with expert-level negotiations expected to follow next week. High-ranking US officials also suggested that a joint text has been accepted by both parties, with the initial document potentially being signed in the coming days.

"We are closer to the peace agreement than ever before. As the finalization is expected to take place within the next 24 hours, Pakistan will immediately prepare for the electronic signing of the peace agreement, followed by technical-level consultations next week," Sharif wrote on the social media platform X.

This potential agreement is seen as historically significant and could lay the foundation for long-term regional stability. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had stated that while the details might evolve, the progress indicated Iran's strengthened position. However, shortly after, US forces reportedly destroyed several Iranian suicide drones heading towards the Strait of Hormuz, with one source indicating the devices posed a threat to maritime traffic.
