Minister calls 'simplistic' any plan to redirect Aughinish Alumina exports from Russia

Niall Collins, Ireland's Minister of State for Agriculture, dismissed suggestions that Aughinish Alumina could simply redirect its exports away from Russia as "simplistic." He argued that such a move would ignore the complexities of global supply chains and manufacturing.

Somebody saying that a quick fix here is that we can somehow nationalise Aughinish or somehow divert their business in another direction just simply does not understand the complexities of how global supply chains and how global manufacturing processes work.

Collins, who represents the Limerick County constituency where the plant employs hundreds, proposed that the European Commission should appoint a specialist organization to track exports. This body would provide oversight to ensure that products leaving Limerick do not contribute to Russia's military or war effort.

The minister also cited "commercial and legal" reasons for not publishing a government report on the plant's exports. While a previous investigation by The Irish Times revealed increased alumina exports to Russian smelters, a government report found no adverse findings against the company. However, a full version of the report, obtained by The Irish Times, raised concerns about potential illicit financial activity by the plant's Russian parent company.

The Ukrainian embassy in Ireland stressed the importance of receiving the full report, noting that Russia's income from these exports could finance its war. A Ukrainian diplomat stated that Russia exports alumina to other countries and receives it from Ireland, allowing it to fund its military operations.
