Minister García Ruminot attended solidarity dinner supporting Camilo Escalona

Chilean Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, José García Ruminot, participated in a solidarity dinner organized by the Socialist Party to support Camilo Escalona, the party's secretary-general and former Senate president, who is undergoing treatment for aggressive prostate cancer.

The event, held at Confitería Torres, aimed to raise funds for Escalona's medical care. Minister García Ruminot, a member of the National Renewal (RN) party, delivered a speech emphasizing the need to put political differences aside during personal crises. "In moments like this, it is appropriate to set aside political differences for a moment and remember something much more important: before adversaries, we are people. Before representatives of different parties, we are compatriots. That is why I wanted to be here," he stated.

García Ruminot reflected on his long political career, which included years serving alongside Escalona in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. "We have walked different political paths, but for many years those paths crossed... We had to discuss, agree, win sometimes and lose others. After so many years, what remains are not just those differences. What remains is the respect built over time, the memories, and also the affection," he added.

He concluded his remarks with a personal message of support: "Tonight, many of us want you to feel that affection. Much strength for you and your family," and thanked Escalona "for so many years shared in the service of Chile."

Socialist Party president Senator Paulina Vodanovic praised García Ruminot's presence as a "beautiful gesture of civic friendship." She noted that his personal knowledge of Escalona, beyond political divides, underscored the deep respect Escalona commands across the political spectrum, including from the right wing. Other Socialist Party members, including Senator Juan Luis Castro and Deputy César Valenzuela, also lauded the minister's attendance, viewing it as a reflection of the broad respect for Escalona's political trajectory and as an example of how such gestures can "ennoble politics."
