Minister Luque demands sanctions for interprovincial bus after dangerous driving video

Ecuador's Minister of Infrastructure and Technology, Roberto Luque, has demanded that the National Transit Agency (ANT) impose sanctions on an interprovincial bus company following the circulation of a video depicting extremely dangerous driving. The footage, recorded in the province of Los Ríos, shows a passenger bus executing a reckless overtaking maneuver on a two-way highway.

The video, shared on social media platform X by a driver, captures the moment the bus veered into the opposing lane to overtake another vehicle. During the maneuver, the bus came within inches of a head-on collision with an oncoming trailer truck. The incident occurred on a stretch of road where other vehicles were also present, highlighting the severe risk to all road users.

What is seen in this video is unacceptable. Behind that maneuver are the lives of Ecuadorians who only went out to work and produce for the country. No one has the right to put them at risk.

In addition to the improper overtaking, the video revealed another alarming irregularity: a passenger was seen standing in the open doorway of the moving bus, with a significant portion of their body extending outside the vehicle. This further underscored the disregard for safety protocols by the bus operator.

Reacting to the viral video, Minister Luque issued a strong statement on his X account, condemning the incident as "unacceptable." He urged the ANT to act swiftly and decisively, holding both the transport company and the driver accountable. Luque emphasized that the lives of Ecuadorians who are simply trying to work and contribute to the country should not be put at risk. He stressed that the regulatory agency must apply the law rigorously to such incidents, making it clear that the safety of those traveling on Ecuador's roads will not be tolerated.
