Minister: Registry Center Management Failed to Take Necessary Decisions

Lithuania needs to bolster its defenses against cybercrime and data breaches, a minister stated Tuesday. The head of the company responsible for the Registry Center's management has been accused of not fully implementing necessary solutions to address existing vulnerabilities.

"The situation is such that today Lithuania must strengthen its capabilities in the fight against cybercrime and intrusions. Data, which is the identity of all of us, all of our personal data, is a very sensitive area," said the minister at the presentation of the National Cybersecurity Status Report. He added, "For every institution's specific action, the head of the institution is responsible, in this case, the management of the Registry Center. In my personal assessment, they have not taken all the necessary decisions to prevent the existing gaps."

This statement follows a criminal investigation launched by the Prosecutor General's Office last Friday. The investigation concerns the alleged leak of real estate registry data from the Registry Center. Authorities suspect that over 600,000 registry extracts may have been leaked, resulting in damages of at least 111,000 euros.

The minister also highlighted user responsibility in cybersecurity. "When we talk about accessing and stealing data through user accounts – you know, we can build the latest, most modern firewalls, the latest servers, security solutions. But if we cannot save our passwords, if we cannot implement two-factor authentication… questions certainly arise," he noted.
