Minister's husband missing after diving into Italian lake

A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway in Italy's Lake Vico for Luigi Cavallari, the husband of Minister of Family Eugenia Roccella. Cavallari, approximately 75 years old, went missing on Saturday afternoon after diving into the lake for a swim.

According to initial reports from Italian media, Cavallari and his wife were on a boat when he decided to jump into the water. Shortly after surfacing briefly, he reportedly stated he felt unwell. The boat, which was not anchored, drifted away, and those on board were unable to reach him in time. His whereabouts have been unknown since then.

The incident occurred near swimmers and restaurant patrons on the lake's shore, who watched the initial rescue attempts with concern. The minister immediately alerted authorities, prompting a swift mobilization of resources. The Carabinieri, specialized underwater rescue units of the fire brigade, and divers transported by helicopter from Rome are all involved in the extensive search.

Adding to the distress, the couple had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March. The minister had previously shared in an interview that she met her husband when she was 18 and they had been inseparable ever since. Cavallari is a professor of Architecture at the "Gabriele d'Annunzio" University of Chieti-Pescara. Authorities have not yet announced the cause of his disappearance as the search continues with the hope of a swift discovery.
