Ministers Review Housing Aid in West Jakarta, Push for Regional Budget Expansion

Indonesian ministers Muhammad Tito Karnavian and Maruarar Sirait inspected the Bantuan Stimulan Perumahan Swadaya (BSPS) program, also known as 'bedah rumah' or house renovation assistance, in West Jakarta on Monday. The visit, which included the head of the Central Statistics Agency, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, aimed to verify that aid is reaching eligible residents.

Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian emphasized the government's consistent field monitoring, noting that this joint visit with the Minister of Public Works and Housing and the BPS head was one of several conducted across various regions, including Jakarta. He highlighted the program's substantial increase in scope compared to previous years, with more houses receiving assistance and a greater number of citizens benefiting.

We are directly going down to the field right now, we have gone down several times with Mr. Ara (Minister of Public Works and Housing), with Mrs. Wini [Head] of BPS.

To further expand the program's reach, Karnavian announced plans to coordinate with the Jakarta provincial government to secure additional support through the Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBD). He recalled a case in East Jakarta where a recipient had lived in the same house for 50 years without receiving any government repair assistance, calling the presidential initiative, executed by Minister Sirait, an "extraordinary breakthrough."

During the inspection, the ministers engaged in direct dialogue with BSPS beneficiaries. A virtual conversation also connected them with recipients in other Jakarta locations. The event, attended by local officials and dignitaries, included the symbolic launch of the BSPS program's implementation in DKI Jakarta.
