Ministry Launches Special Inspection of GTX-A Samsung Station Construction Amid Rebar Errors

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has initiated a comprehensive special inspection of the construction process for the GTX-A Samsung Station, a critical segment of the capital region's high-speed rail network. This move comes after the discovery of significant construction flaws, specifically the erroneous installation of rebar in a crucial support pillar for the underground platform.

The issue came to light when it was found that only one row of rebar was used in a pillar where two were required. This oversight, identified in April, has raised serious concerns about the structural integrity and safety of the station. The ministry, in collaboration with external experts, has deemed further investigation necessary to assess the adequacy of proposed reinforcement measures and the overall construction process.

Based on the facts, an investigation prior to indictment is scheduled to commence.

To address these shortcomings, a special inspection team, comprising ministry officials and independent experts, has been formed. This team will meticulously examine all aspects of the Yongdong-daero underground complex development project, focusing on construction, safety, and quality management practices. The investigation aims to determine whether all parties involved, including the construction companies and project supervisors, fulfilled their responsibilities in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

This special inspection follows an earlier audit initiated by the ministry on Seoul City and the National Railway Corporation due to the construction errors and delayed reporting. The ministry has vowed to implement strict measures, including penalties such as demerit points, corrective orders, and fines, based on the inspection's findings. The investigation also extends to the police, with the acting commissioner of the National Police Agency confirming an inquiry into the facts of the case. The situation underscores the paramount importance of rigorous oversight and adherence to safety standards in large-scale infrastructure projects.
