Ministry of Health: BPJS Patient Waited 8 Hours at RSCM ER Due to Limited HCU Beds

The Indonesian Ministry of Health has addressed concerns surrounding the death of Yurizal Tri Chaerawan, a BPJS Kesehatan patient who allegedly waited eight hours in the emergency room at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) in Jakarta before passing away in late July.

The ministry clarified that the extended wait was not due to a lack of initial treatment in the emergency department. Instead, it stemmed from the patient's need for High Care Unit (HCU) admission, a facility with limited capacity. RSCM, as a national referral hospital, experiences high patient volumes, which can affect transfer times from the ER to specialized units.

The principle at RSCM is that it is a national referral center, so the possibility of RSCM being full is very high. But whether it has to wait 8 hours depends on the situation; if it's empty, it will be faster than that.

Director General of Advanced Health Services at the Ministry of Health, Azhar Jaya, explained that Yurizal required HCU care due to his condition, and the availability of such beds is restricted. He added that the patient also had significant comorbidities. While the ministry cited medical confidentiality for not disclosing the specific diagnosis, they asserted that the family understood the circumstances of the case.

The incident gained public attention after Yurizal's own social media posts detailing his eight-hour wait for a room went viral. The posts, made on July 22, did not initially name the hospital. The situation drew criticism after some comments on the posts, allegedly from healthcare professionals, were perceived as lacking empathy.
