Ministry of Labour mobilizes support for families affected by Coopers Pen demolition

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is providing crucial support to families impacted by the demolition of homes in Coopers Pen, Trelawny. The operation, which occurred on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, saw 20 housing units torn down, leaving approximately 40 families in need of assistance.

Following the incident, social workers from the ministry's Trelawny Parish Office immediately visited the community. They conducted a preliminary assessment to identify the immediate welfare needs of the affected households, paying close attention to vulnerable groups including children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

In line with its social protection mandate, the ministry mobilized additional resources. Working alongside the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and other stakeholders, the team provided essential humanitarian aid. This assistance included food supplies, bottled water, toiletries, buckets, and temporary shelter materials like tents and lighting equipment. The ministry emphasized its commitment to assessing ongoing needs and coordinating with partners to ensure eligible families receive available social assistance.
