Miracle in Nepal: Two Workers Pulled Alive From Tunnel After Days of Flooding

Two workers trapped inside a tunnel in Nepal for more than a week emerged alive, offering a rare moment of hope after floods and landslides devastated the region.

Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan were pulled from the tunnel at the Trishuli-3 dam construction site after mud and debris sealed off the area. Images released by the Energy Ministry showed one survivor conscious on a stretcher. The other, covered in mud, managed to stand and wave with help from rescuers.

They were the first workers found alive inside the tunnel after the floods trapped a number of people at the construction site. Authorities estimated that about 100 people were affected by the mud and landslides caused by the disaster.

The Nepalese army said rescue teams were still searching for those trapped and missing. Access remained difficult because of the destruction left behind by the floods, which struck valleys along the Nepal-China border after a wall of water, ice and debris swept through the area.
