Miracle on the 10th day after Nepal floods

A Chinese worker trapped deep inside a tunnel emerged alive after 10 days, in a rare rescue following the devastating floods near Nepal’s border with China.

The Nepal Army and foreign specialists found the worker 225 meters from the entrance to a tunnel at a hydroelectric project in the Rasuwa region. The tunnel had been sealed by mud and debris after the disaster on August 26, which killed 1,344 people.

The rescue came a day after teams pulled two Nepali workers alive from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Plant. They had survived for nine days. In Nuwakot, rescuers also freed a 60-year-old woman from a house buried under debris.

The scale of the disaster remains severe. Authorities estimate that about 900 workers at 12 hydropower projects are missing, including 500 believed to be trapped inside tunnels. The floods have also left 5,531 people missing.
