This shift in allegiance comes after Infantino's plans to privatize aspects of football, a move initially seen as potentially smoothing over previous controversies. However, these plans have now galvanized European football authorities into action. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, backed by all European federations, initially threatened a boycott of the next World Cup if Infantino's privatization plans, reportedly linked with Donald Trump's family, were successful.

Čeferin has now escalated his stance, indicating a broader effort to oust Infantino. The European bloc's unified opposition presents a substantial challenge to Infantino's leadership, contrasting sharply with the near-universal support he was anticipated to receive.
