Mirtha Legrand's health update follows absence from her television show

Mirtha Legrand missed her historic Saturday program, La noche de Mirtha, after coming down with a severe case of influenza accompanied by heavy coughing. Her granddaughter, Juana Viale, stepped in as host, as she has on previous occasions.

The decision was made as a precaution, her daughter Marcela Tinayre had said. At the start of the recorded program, Viale confirmed that her 99-year-old grandmother was ill. “Grandma has the flu,” she said, adding with humor that Legrand was recovering with teas and natural remedies before clarifying that she was taking medication.

“I’m sending you a very big kiss, Grandma. I hope I do very well as your replacement,” Viale said. The program went ahead normally with lawyers Ana Rosenfeld and Elba Marcovecchio, and journalists Luciana Rubinska and Karina Iavícoli as guests.

Ángel de Brito later shared an update after speaking with Legrand. “I spoke with Mirtha Legrand. She tells me she is well, recovering from the cold. ‘Improving little by little,’” he wrote on his Instagram broadcast channel. He also joked that Legrand “goes out more than all of us,” referring to her continued attendance at events, theater performances and gatherings with friends until recently.

Legrand is recovering at home in Palermo as she prepares to turn 100 on February 23. She hopes to resume her professional schedule soon.
