Kicillof accuses Milei of extorting provinces for political gain

Governor Axel Kicillof of Buenos Aires province has accused President Javier Milei of employing financial coercion against Argentina's provinces. Kicillof asserts that Milei is deliberately creating fiscal hardship to extract political concessions from regional governments.

In an opinion piece, Kicillof detailed his view that the national government is using the distribution of public funds as a tool for political extortion. He claims that provinces are having funds withheld or reduced, only to be offered partial relief in exchange for legislative support. This tactic, he argues, is designed to help Milei achieve his goals, such as suspending the PASO (primarias abiertas, simultáneas y obligatorias) primary elections, which he believes would benefit his own re-election prospects.

Kicillof drew a stark analogy, comparing the government's actions to a doctor who first "suffocates" a patient and then doles out oxygen in minimal doses. He explained that the government first "defunds the provinces, takes away resources, paralyzes works," and then uses the "partial relief of that suffocation as a bargaining chip." This relief comes in the form of fund transfers, authorizations, or project approvals, all contingent on political backing.

The governor criticized this approach, stating that it bypasses genuine debate and consensus-building. He suggested that Milei's focus is not on addressing the negative economic consequences, such as job losses and wage declines, but rather on manipulating the political landscape for personal gain and ensuring his own re-election.
