MLB Trade: Taiwanese-American Power Hitter 'Long' Traded to Marlins, Cubs Acquire 28-Year-Old Left-Hander

In a significant trade deadline move, the Chicago Cubs have sent Taiwanese-American power hitter Jonathon Long to the Miami Marlins. The deal also involved right-handed pitcher Jace Beck heading to Miami, while the Cubs received left-handed starting pitcher Braxton Garrett in return.

Garrett, who underwent left elbow surgery in 2024, recently returned to the mound. He made two starts in the majors in May, posting a 14.54 ERA over 4.1 innings pitched. In 16 appearances, 15 as a starter, for Triple-A this season, Garrett recorded a 4-4 record with a 2.90 ERA.

Long, considered the 10th-best prospect in the Cubs' farm system, had a strong showing at Triple-A this year. In 99 games, he hit 12 home runs and drove in 62 runs, maintaining a .283 batting average and an .819 OPS (on-base plus slugging).

This trade marks a shift for both organizations as they adjust their rosters ahead of the latter half of the season. The Marlins gain a promising young hitter, while the Cubs bolster their starting pitching rotation with Garrett.
