Mobile blood donation service launches in Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, has introduced a new mobile blood donation service aimed at boosting blood supplies across the state. The initiative features a specially converted caravan equipped with four donation stations, designed to bring blood donation opportunities closer to the public.

The mobile unit will operate at various locations, including businesses, institutions, and public spaces, complementing the existing blood donation services provided by the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein. This expansion comes in response to a concerning decline in the number of available blood donors.

Health Minister Kerstin von der Decken, who participated in the launch by donating blood, emphasized the importance of the initiative. "Blood donations are an act of community, responsibility, and humanity," she stated. "The mobile unit brings the opportunity for blood donation closer to people and thus strengthens healthcare in Schleswig-Holstein."

The mobile unit is capable of facilitating up to 60 blood donations within a four-hour period. It also includes a waiting area with seating and a small kitchenette. The German Red Cross reported earlier this year that approximately 500 blood donations are needed daily in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg combined to meet the demands of clinics and medical practices. The new mobile service hopes to attract new donors and better engage existing ones to help meet this critical need.
