Modi to attend SCO summit in Kyrgyzstan, meet Putin

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan, where he will hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Indian government confirmed the prime minister's attendance on Monday.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conveyed Modi's anticipation for the meeting, stating, "Prime Minister Modi looks forward to meeting you at the SCO summit and then welcoming you to India for the BRICS leaders' summit." This statement was made at the beginning of his meeting with Putin in Moscow.

The SCO summit, scheduled to begin on August 31 in Bishkek, will bring together the heads of state of the regional alliance, which includes major powers like China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and Iran, along with several Central Asian nations. Discussions will focus on military cooperation. The previous SCO summit in Tianjin, China, concluded with a joint declaration from leaders including Modi and Putin, opposing "external interference and disruptions to international trade."

Jaishankar's remarks also confirmed Putin's participation in the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chinese President Xi Jinping are also expected at the BRICS meeting. Xi's attendance would mark his first visit to India in seven years. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is not expected to attend the BRICS summit.
