Mohammed and Sophia top Berlin's baby name list again

Mohammed and Sophia continue to hold the top spots as the most popular baby names in Berlin for 2025, according to the Society for the German Language (GfdS). This marks the seventh consecutive year Mohammed has led the rankings in the capital, while Sophia also maintains its leading position.

The GfdS, based in Wiesbaden, compiles its annual list using data from approximately 750 registry offices across Germany. This year's data captured nearly 830,000 entries, representing about 91 percent of all names given to babies in Germany in 2025. The society considers alternative spellings when compiling its rankings.

While Mohammed and Sophia lead in Berlin, the top names in the neighboring state of Brandenburg for 2025 were Emilia and Theo. In previous years, Matheo had held the number one position there. On a national level, Sophia and Noah are the most frequently chosen names for newborns across Germany.

The GfdS has been publishing its annual list of the most common first names in Germany since 1977, providing a consistent overview of naming trends throughout the country.
