Monaco stun PSG to leave French champions winless after three games

Paris Saint-Germain had the chances, the control and the lead. Monaco left the Parc des Princes with all three points.

Marquinhos put PSG ahead after about half an hour, finishing Kvaratskhelia’s cross with his chest. The goal followed further PSG chances from Doué and Kvaratskhelia, while Akliouche struck the crossbar. Monaco had made little impact before that point.

Yet Monaco turned its first shot on target into an equalizer. Near the hour mark, Nazinho headed in at the far post, finding space behind an exposed Paris defense. The goal came despite a stark statistical gap: Monaco had recorded 0.04 expected goals, compared with 1.84 for PSG at that stage and 2.18 by the end.

Idumbo then completed the turnaround in the 72nd minute with a left-footed shot inside the area, beating the goalkeeper at his near post. PSG coach Luis Enrique sent on Ferran Torres, Ousmane Dembélé, Godts and Dro, but the changes produced no response.

The result left PSG with two points from nine, an unfamiliar start for the reigning French champions. Calling it a crisis this early may be excessive, the account says, especially after the club won the European Super Cup, but the defeat added to a difficult opening that also included a loss in the French Super Cup. Monaco, led by Filipe Luis, remained perfect after three matches and moved seven points above PSG.
