Monday thunderstorm floods roads, halts traffic and transit across Edmonton

Edmonton faced significant disruptions on Monday as a series of severe thunderstorms swept across the region, unleashing heavy rainfall that flooded streets and halted transit services. Environment Canada issued warnings for storms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and torrential downpours.

The deluge transformed roads into rivers in various neighborhoods, including Belgravia and the University of Alberta area, as well as newer communities in the southeast. The flooding impacted public transportation, with a tree falling on the Valley Line southeast tracks and causing service suspensions. Replacement bus services faced major delays due to flooded interchanges.

This summer's extreme weather has led to unprecedented rainfall in Edmonton. Combined rainfall for June and July has reached 511 millimeters, the highest total recorded since 1953. This follows a record-breaking June with over 260 mm of rain. The saturated ground conditions exacerbate the impact of storms, leading to more runoff than usual entering the city's stormwater system.
