Monetochka's song removed from Russian version of new Spider-Man film

The Russian dubbed version of the latest Spider-Man film has removed the song "Monopoly" by Russian singer Monetochka, sparking discussion about artistic expression and political stances. The track was previously cut from the Ukrainian release of the film following audience objections to the inclusion of a Russian performer.

Ksenia Sobchak, a prominent Russian public figure, drew attention to the removal, noting that the song was replaced with a track by Rihanna in the official dubbed version available on Rutube. She pointed out the irony: the song was cut from the Ukrainian version because Monetochka is Russian (despite her condemnation of the war), and then removed from the Russian version because she is a Russian who has condemned the war.

Representatives from the "Planeta Kino" cinema chain in Ukraine had previously confirmed that the segment featuring Monetochka's song was entirely cut, stating it did not affect the film's plot. This decision came after some viewers expressed outrage over the song's presence in the soundtrack.

The global release of the new Spider-Man film began in late July, with releases in CIS countries starting August 6th. Notably, Sony Pictures films have not been officially released in Russia since 2022. The new Spider-Man movie was slated for release in Russia through a "pre-session service" arrangement. However, Russian media reported that distributor "Atmosfera Kino" and the Association of Cinema Owners requested screenings be postponed until August 20th to accommodate the release of the Russian film "The Last Warrior.
