Monika Sinković's Dreamlike Portraits Exhibit in Zagreb

Galerija Kranjčar in Zagreb is currently hosting "Something Like a Dream," an exhibition showcasing the latest works by artist Monika Sinković. The collection, comprising mostly figurative paintings, delves into the ethereal and often elusive quality of dreams.

Sinković's artistic cycle moves beyond traditional portraiture, eschewing the detailed psychological characterization of specific individuals. Instead, her focus sharpens on evoking a general mood, one that mirrors the indistinct, fluid, and sometimes hazy nature of dreamscapes. The title itself leaves no room for ambiguity regarding the exhibition's thematic core.

It is accurate to say Sinković paints memories of dreams, prioritizing their elemental visual characteristics over concrete narratives. These are not images of crystal clarity but rather reflections of the ambiguity and fluidity inherent in the dreaming state. The paintings capture a sense of fog, fluidity, and haziness, mirroring the very essence of dreams.

Born in Zagreb in 1997, Sinković graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2023. She has participated in four solo and multiple group exhibitions, including an artistic residency in Leipzig. Currently sharing a studio with fellow painters, she finds inspiration in the mundane, observing people, their movements, and the "in-between" moments of daily life.

Her work is driven by an internal sense of urgency and the constant pressure of obligations, which ultimately find their way onto the canvas. Sinković is fascinated by how people spend their time and how they transform moment by moment. She is less interested in the specific identity of her subjects than in capturing the feeling of a particular instant, the movement, the tension, the rhythm of an action, presenting a distinct artistic challenge.
