Monkeys Snatch Bag with $200,000 in Valuables, Prompting Dramatic Rescue Operation

A scenic spot in Taitung, Taiwan, known for its wild Formosan rock macaques, became the scene of an unusual "robbery" when monkeys snatched a handbag from a visiting couple. The incident occurred at Dengxian Bridge in Taiyuan Village, Donghe Township, where the couple from Taipei were enjoying the view.

According to reports, the monkeys grabbed the handbag, and upon realizing it contained no food, discarded it into a deep, steep ravine below the bridge. The bag held valuables estimated at around $200,000, including hearing aids, cash, and crucial personal documents. The sheer difficulty of the terrain prevented the couple from attempting a self-rescue, leading them to report the incident to the police.

Responding swiftly, officers from the Taiyuan Police Station, along with the local village chief and several enthusiastic residents, assessed the dangerous situation. Recognizing the risks of a manual descent, they coordinated to bring in a heavy-duty crane. A rescuer was then safely lowered by rope into the treacherous ravine to search for the missing bag.

After a concerted effort, the team successfully located and retrieved the handbag from the dense undergrowth. Fortunately, all the contents, including the valuable hearing aids, cash, and documents, were recovered intact. The couple expressed immense gratitude for the rapid and effective rescue by the police and community members. Authorities used the incident to remind the public to secure their belongings and refrain from feeding or provoking wild monkeys when visiting such areas.
