Montevideo Opens Registration for Free Guided Tour with Limited Places and Transport

Montevideo has opened registration for a free guided visit to the 300 Carlos Memory Site, located inside the Army’s Material and Armament Service in the Casavalle area.

The tour will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026. A free bus will leave the Montevideo municipal headquarters at 9 a.m. and is scheduled to return at 2 p.m. Places are limited to 40 participants.

After arriving at the military compound entrance on Avenida de las Instrucciones, the group will walk about 500 meters to Hangar No. 4. Specialist staff will guide the walk, and survivors of the clandestine center will provide direct testimony.

The site hosted operations by the Coordinating Body for Anti-Subversive Activities between 1975 and 1977, during the illegal persecution of groups opposing Uruguay’s military dictatorship, according to the municipal government. Victims’ statements to the courts helped identify the exact location inside the Army compound in 2012. The site was formally declared a Memory Site of the Recent Past under Law No. 19,641, enacted in 2018.

People who want to attend must complete the Montevideo government’s online accreditation form by Tuesday, September 8. Organizers ask registrants to arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes before departure.
