Montevideo street race shooting kills 12-year-old boy, injures several

A 12-year-old boy has died and at least four other individuals were injured following a shooting that erupted during clandestine street races in Montevideo's Parque Rodó. The violent incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning amidst a large crowd gathered for the illegal races.

According to police sources, some of the injured were taken to Hospital Pasteur, while another was transported to Pereira Rossell. Telemundo reported that videos recorded by attendees show the event was crowded, and at one point, gunfire erupted in bursts. The same report indicated that another minor, a 14-year-old, was among the injured.

The clandestine races that are usually held in Parque Rodó ended with a shootout early this Friday.

Forensic police worked at the scene throughout Friday morning. The investigation has led to the closure of the Rambla in the area of the Teatro de Verano and Paseo de los Pescadores, causing traffic disruptions. The area is known for hosting driving schools that teach various maneuvers.
