Montevideo street renamed for Argentine artist María Elena Walsh

Montevideo's Departmental Legislature has officially renamed a prominent street in the city, honoring the celebrated Argentine artist María Elena Walsh. The avenue, previously known as Av. Costanera, will now be called Rambla María Elena Walsh. This street runs alongside the Miguelete stream in the Capurro neighborhood.

Walsh, a renowned poet, novelist, playwright, singer, and composer, was particularly celebrated for her contributions to children's literature and music. However, the Legislature also recognized her broader impact, noting that her work addressed issues of censorship and repression during the military dictatorship and demonstrated an early feminist perspective in her essays and articles.

In a separate but related decision, the Legislature modified regulations concerning bicycle parking in parking lots. The previous rules, established in 2016, were deemed excessive after inspections revealed they were disproportionate to actual needs. The new regulations establish a tiered system, linking the required number of bicycle spaces to the total number of car parking spots available.
