Monument to Our Lady of the Assumption to be inaugurated August 14, 2026

Construction is underway for a new monument dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption along the Costanera Norte in Paraguay's capital, Asunción. The structure is slated for inauguration on August 14, 2026, a date of significant religious importance as it marks the solemnity of the patron saint of Paraguay.

The Archdiocese of Asunción officially announced the commencement of the works via social media. "We announce that the works for the construction of the monument to Our Lady of the Assumption have officially begun, which will be inaugurated on August 14, 2026, within the framework of the solemnity of our Mother and Patron," the archdiocese stated.

Project coordinator Father Erwin Soto highlighted the symbolic importance of the chosen location. "A historic and important place for national identity," he described the site situated in the Bay of Asunción, facing the López Palace along the Costanera Norte.

The start of construction on July 13 holds particular significance for the Catholic Church in Paraguay. On this date in 1951, Pope Pius XII declared Our Lady of the Assumption the patroness of the entire Republic of Paraguay and its Armed Forces. The Archdiocese has also extended an invitation to the faithful and the public to contribute voluntarily to the monument's construction.
