MONUSCO launches community project to curb Ebola in Djugu

The UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is shifting its Ebola response strategy in Ituri province. After bolstering logistical support for medical teams, the mission is now focusing on community trust and direct involvement to halt the disease's spread.

A new awareness project officially launched on July 30 in Miala, Djugu territory, marks a significant change in the region's Ebola response. MONUSCO's Demobilization, Disarmament, Community Reintegration, and Stabilization (DDRC-S) section is moving from material aid to a social, ground-level approach.

Former combatants undergoing social reintegration will now serve as community health relays. Their primary role will be to foster local trust, combat persistent rumors about Ebola, and dismantle disinformation networks that hinder effective care. The project, executed by local organizations Hope for Peace and Development and the Network of Associations for Sustainable Development, began with capacity-building sessions for community leaders, religious figures, and representatives of women's and youth groups.

The initiative plans to expand to Balingina-Sota and Tchomia. MONUSCO estimates that nearly a hundred beneficiaries will receive training, and over 20,000 people will be reached through community dialogues, radio broadcasts, and a rumor-monitoring mechanism. The mission believes community buy-in is crucial for an effective Ebola response and regional stabilization efforts.
