Two female officers have resigned from Vilnius Prison amid an investigation into alleged "love affairs" with inmates, prompting a review of security protocols. The temporary head of the prison, Tomas Masiulionis, confirmed the existence of relationships but clarified that their sexual nature had not been proven.

The Lithuanian Prison Service stated that following the discovery of risks, the head of Vilnius Prison, along with criminal intelligence officers, initiated searches of the prison premises. These searches uncovered a significant quantity of prohibited items, including mobile phones and a knife, within inmates' cells. The service noted that the security management situation at Vilnius Prison, despite having a large number of officers, raised serious doubts.

An internal review will now examine the conduct of the remaining officers to determine if they took any actions that benefited inmates. Additionally, further preventive and control measures will be implemented to prevent similar situations from recurring. The service emphasized its commitment to thoroughly assessing the situation and taking necessary steps to maintain order and security within the correctional facilities.
