More than 20 injured after passenger ferry collides with tanker in Malaysia

Twenty-one people were injured when a passenger ferry collided with a tanker near Swettenham Pier on Malaysia’s Penang island. Six of the injured suffered serious injuries, according to the Penang Fire and Rescue Department.

The collision occurred at about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday as the ferry traveled from the island toward the mainland with 140 passengers aboard. The impact overturned several motorcycles on the ferry and injured passengers, said Yeoh Soon Hin, chairman of the Penang Port Commission. The victims were taken to a hospital in George Town.

The impact caused several motorcycles aboard the ferry to overturn and some passengers to be injured.

Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash and establish responsibility. Yeoh called on the passenger ferry operator to review its safety procedures.

“We will take the necessary measures based on the findings of the investigation, including improvements to prevent this type of incident from happening again,” Yeoh said.
