Morelos Installs 1,038 Cameras at Public Universities and Offers Students Transport Support

Morelos has launched a university security plan that will place 1,038 surveillance cameras across 23 campuses belonging to six public universities in the state.

The initiative was promised by Governor Margarita González Saravia after two university students disappeared in March and were later found dead. The Autonomous University of Morelos State will receive 749 cameras, including 123 at the Chamilpa campus and 87 in the Los Belenes area.

The plan also covers the Emiliano Zapata Technological University, the Polytechnic University of Morelos, the Technological University of Southern Morelos, and technological institutes in Cuautla and Zacatepec. It includes 450 lights, 10 public transport stops and four security operation modules at Chamilpa, Técnicos Laboratoristas, Cuautla Preparatory School No. 3 and the School of Higher Studies in Atlatlahucan.

The state government also introduced the Pase Olín card, which will provide students with 2,080 pesos every two months to subsidize about 80 transport trips. The card blocks transactions at businesses that sell alcoholic drinks. Distribution will begin Sept. 2 at the Polytechnic University of Morelos and end Sept. 9 in Los Belenes, after covering the Zacatepec and Cuautla institutes and the Chamilpa campus.
